More than 25 years a surgeon, Roberts is a steady pair of hands. Equally, he’s kind, easy-going and meticulous about managing expectations. ‘They’re through the roof right now,’ he says. And the reason? ‘Simply put, because you can manipulate everything on the internet to get the perfect image – and some surgical candidates expect the same from their procedures.’

Revisions still account for the majority of his rhinoplasties: ‘But not just rebuilding noses, such as the tiny ski-slopes that were popular in the 1980s; also correcting more recent work, where patients have been over-operated on.’ For the latter, an open approach is preferable; however, a closed technique produces an immaculate result with no tell-tale scarring between the nostrils. ‘And for a relatively minimal change,’ says Roberts, ‘perhaps to correct a small bump, or make a modest change to the tip, this will give a much quicker recovery, as you haven’t deconstructed the lymphatics or nerve supply.’ When it comes to patient selection, he’s characteristically sage:

‘Most of the work in preparation for a rhinoplasty happens in the conversations that we have before the operation,’ he says. ‘And a great deal of that is working out whether someone is emotionally mature enough for the procedure.’
